LipiFlow® is an FDA-approved treatment for Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), the
primary cause of dry eyes. LipiFlow® cures MGD by warming the inside of eyelids to
restore healthy oil production and tear quality.
How does LipiFlow® work?
Prior to the procedure, an anesthetic drop will be applied to your eyes.
When your eyes are fully numb, your doctor will place LipiFlow® sterile, single-use
activators beneath and over your eyelids, without touching the eye’s surface.
Dome-shaped, single-use activators then are placed on your eyes. For the first two minutes,
activators maintain consistent pressure while warming to temperature that can dissolve gland
blockages.
Over the next 10 minutes, the activators alternate between different levels of pressure,
delivering the massage that initiates the natural flow of oil.
It takes about 6-8 weeks to see the best results and relief can last up to a year.
Following a LipiFlow® treatment, Meibomian glands resume normal production of oils
needed to produce high-quality tears. These oils prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. This
can provide long-term relief from burning, dryness, and irritation.
